In 1933 the Cherokee Tavern, a small bar and restaurant seating sixty patrons, opened its doors on Smith and Annapolis; Bob and Dorothy Casper purchased that restaurant in 1970 and called it Casper’s Cherokee Sirloin Room. Their dedication and personal involvement in offering the very best value for food and spirits plus friendly service, continually added loyal customers, necessitating expansions in 1977, 1979,1981 and 1997.
In 1987 the Casper Brothers purchased the Cherokee Sirloin Room and have continued the traditions that were established during the formative and growing years when their parents owned and operated the popular West Side restaurant. Since 1981 the Cherokee has provided Thanksgiving meals to the local community. Hundreds of volunteers descend upon the Cherokee to help prepare, package and deliver over 3,000 meals to those in need.
In 1991 we opened another Cherokee in Eagan. In 1997 we made a major expansion and revamping of the West St. Paul Cherokee and in 2001 we did an extensive remodeling at our Eagan restaurant.
Recently we have returned to our roots. In 2009 the West St. Paul location changed its name back to its original “Cherokee Tavern”. We under went a renovation which included refurbishing the original chirazo bar floor, authentic antique lighting from the 1930’s, a new hardwood floor, new tables and chairs, more booths, opened up the bar area giving more space and added a stage area so we can offer “Live” entertainment. We are making every effort to ensure that your next visit to either location will be the most enjoyable and bring you back again and again.
